Attack dogs’ owner in court today

THE owner of the pack of four dogs that attacked a six-year-old girl in Mkhondeni last week will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court today.

Said police spokesperson Joey Jeevan: “The 65-year-old shop owner was arrested yesterday and was later released on a warning. He is charged with keeping ferocious dogs and will be appearing in court.”

Olwethu Mbotho, who was bitten on her left leg and head, was on her way home from a nearby tuckshop on Thursday when she was attacked by the tuckshop owner’s dogs, which were unleashed.

The girl’s father, Trueman Maphumulo, said the accused refuses to take responsibility for the incident.

“The dogs’ owner refuses to pay for the expenses that we have incurred. He says that he cannot afford to pay us anything, which is unfair.

“He knew that his dogs should have been locked up as the law states, but they were not and that is his fault. I am currently seeking legal advice and will see how to proceed,” he said.

To confiscate the dogs the SPCA will need to obtain permission from the municipality, which has concluded its investigation.

Municipal spokesperson Brian Zuma said that should it be found that the dogs were roaming, as is alleged, “we will co-operate with the SPCA for the dogs to be impounded”.
