Auction sites also see demand

THERE is also growing interest in Nelson Mandela memorabilia on online auction sites.

South African online auction trade site Olx had several postings in June related to Mandela, from artwork, statues and even a special edition skateboard deck.

One asks for R10 000 for a

Telkom phone card with an image of Mandela.

Painting prices range between R10 000 and R16 500, while a statue and skateboard will set you back just over R1 000.

Paul Mills, owner of Antiquarian Auctions, a South African-based online book auction site that deals in old and rare books, said while they have turned away a number of offers for books to be auctioned on their site, they have experienced interest from people wanting to sell books.

“Various people have approached us with books to sell but personally I feel uncomfortable selling Mandela books at a time when he is so gravely ill. If there is a death of any public figures then people seem compelled to sell items related to them. I have asked the sellers to wait and see [what transpires with Mandela’s health] out of respect,” said Mills.

In the past the website auctioned off a limited special edition Long Walk to Freedom leather bound hardcover with the statesman’s signature for $3 000 (about R30 000) and an illustrated version of the same book for $2 200 (R22 000).

“Long Walk to Freedom is commonly found but the signed versions are not,” said Mills.

“Buyers of Mandela signed books must be aware of suspect copies with forged signatures. Thankfully Mandela’s signature is unique in the sense that it is always the same. It is as if he takes his time to write his signature each time. Secondly, he would often date his signature,” said Mills.
