Audit: KZN to be weaned from consultants

2011-07-01 00:00

MUNICIPAL contracts worth more than R51,7 million in KZN were awarded to civil servants. Of this R22,9 million involved contracts awarded to people linked to municipalities. They included councillors, municipal managers, mayors and officials managing supply chains.

This emerged in Auditor-General Terence Nombembe’s report on the audit outcomes of the province, released this week.

Nombembe expressed concern at the extensive use and over- dependency on consultants by municipalities in KZN. He singled out poor IT management, saying systems need to be co-ordinated. He called on National Treasury and provincial departments to guide KZN municipalities.

Of the 60 municipalities in KZN that were analysed, Nombembe said, 77% were assisted by accounting consultants at a cost of R85,96 million. He was heartened that KZN Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize in March committed to reduce the cost and use of consultants.
