Audit deficiency

2008-03-01 00:00

According to the provincial treasurer, two-thirds of KwaZulu-Natal municipalities require support and over half are subject to forensic investigation. These are the latest shocking findings revealed by the office of the MEC for Local Government.

They confirm that the quality of financial management and of governance in local authorities leave much to be desired. And they reinforce the belief that this crucial tier of government has been undermined by political appointments at the expense of professional public servants.

Whatever the drama of national politics, it is at local level that the mass of people interact with government. The inability of almost all municipal authorities to comply with basic auditing standards within deadlines sums up their overall lack of capacity and service delivery. Without a functioning local government, modern life begins to unravel with the potential for political instability.
