Audit reveals unread meters

2013-11-28 00:00

A WATER and electricity meter audit revealed meters that had not been read for more than eight years in the Msunduzi Municipality.

The inspection had been carried out by the Auditor-General (A-G), municipal manager (MM) Mxolisi Nkosi told council yesterday. Nkosi said the A-G found that some meters were last read in 2004, 2008 or 2010. The reasons for the meters not being read was because they could not be located, they were faulty, or covered with mud or overgrown grass.

The MM said that the audit uncovered 6 400 (20%) electricity and 9 695 (11%) water meters that were unread. The city has more water than electricity meters. Nkosi added that a programme was in place to sort out the problem.

The A-G had warned that if the meters were not replaced and readings obtained, this could lead to an audit qualification.
