CAPE TOWN — David Warner and Ryan Harris, heroes of Australia’s 245-run win over South Africa in the Newlands Test, have achieved best-ever positions in the latest ICC player rankings for Tests, released yesterday.

Warner, who slammed hundreds (135 and 145) in both innings in Cape Town, has moved up five places to a career-high of fifth in the ICC player rankings for Test batsmen. Warner was named the man of the match for his efforts with the bat.

Warner, who also won the man of the series award, is now the highest-ranked Australian batsman, with his skipper Michael Clarke in ninth position being the only other in the top 10. The batting table is still headed by SA’s AB de Villiers, with Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara in second place and West Indies’ Shivnarine Chanderpaul in third position.

Outside the top 10, Australia’s Steve Smith jumped five places to a best-ever 12th following knocks of 84 and 36 in the Newlands Test. The biggest mover outside the top 20 was South Africa’s Faf du Plessis, who rose six places to a best-ever 23rd.

In the ICC player rankings for Test bowlers, Harris — who ended with a match haul of seven for 95 — moved up two places to a best-ever second position.

Harris has now moved ahead of South Africa’s Vernon Philander and team-mate Mitchell Johnson.

Philander, who claimed just one wicket in the Cape Town Test, is down a place to third, while Johnson has dropped down a place to fourth. The bowlers’ table is still headed by Dale Steyn. Outside the top 20 the biggest movers were James Pattinson in 28th (up by four), Kyle Abbott in 45th (up by three) and JP Duminy in 62nd (up by seven).
