Australian visitor sees uncle shot

AN Australian visitor to Durban was witness to the tragic shooting of a relative who came to his rescue while he was being robbed of his wallet and cellphone.

The shooting, occurred outside the victim’s home in Overport. He died in a Durban hospital.

Police spokesman Superitendent Vincent Mdunge said the man was trying to save his nephew from being hijacked when he was shot. He said 60-year-old Colin McDonald heard a commotion outside his house and ran to investigate.

“While the suspects were searching the driver for his cellphone and wallet, McDonald intervened to help. One of the suspects opened fire and McDonald sustained a single gunshot wound to the head,” he said.

Netcare spokesman Jeff Wicks said the victim was treated at the scene before being taken to St Augustine’s Hospital where he died yesterday morning.

Mayville police confirmed a case of hijacking and murder is being investigated. No arrests have been made yet.
