Autism speech well received

2012-10-23 00:00

SHELLIQUE Carby of Anerley, who is part of Autism South Coast, gave a presentation at the recent annual autism conference in Pretoria.

She spoke of the causes and effects of bullying and the solutions to it. It caused her to develop post-traumatic stress syndrome.

She said the best way to deal with it was for the victim to be confident, know his purpose in life and not get swayed by the pressure of fitting into the crowd.

She said it’s good to be different and pupils should see the value of diversity, including neurodiversity.

Teachers and classmates all needed to be involved. Carby has Asperger Syndrome and was bullied until matric.

The audience was quiet after her presentation seemingly hit with the reality of her experience. She received compliments from many of the delegates.

The director of the autism association in India asked her if the association could use her presentation notes in their next newsletter and a Cape Town teacher asked her to deliver her presentation at the school next year.
