Awareness march

2010-12-09 00:00

THE Ugu District Municipality, in partnership with various government departments, will hold a “peaceful women’s march” in support of the 16 Days of Activism campaign against abuse of women and children tomorrow.

The municipality’s acting senior manager of mayoralty and communications, Lindani Mzotho, said: “The peaceful walk will also incorporate the International Human Rights Day held on December 10.”

The women of the district were urged to participate fully in the march to remember new and existing victims of abuse.

Mzotho said the march will aim to raise awareness for a society that is free of gender oppression and all forms of inequality, and to educate people to protect those who are vulnerable.

“We are trying to implement an effective 16 Days of Activism campaign that translates into a sustainable 365 days of action to end violence against women and children,” said Mzotho.

“The walk will help us to promote women’s human rights and strengthen women’s empowerment.”

The march begins at 10 am at Dick King Square and ends at the civic centre in Port Shepstone.

Members of the public are urged to attend and play a role in breaking the cycle of women and child abuse.
