Awol? Residents query mayor’s absence in strike

2011-08-26 00:00

“MR Mayor where are you? Come back!” This is the plea from Msunduzi residents to Mayor Chris Ndlela, who, they complain, seems to be missing in action during the municipal workers’ strike.

Residents say there is a deafening silence from the city hall about what is going on. This is in sharp contrast to Durban, where eThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo is giving residents daily strike updates. He has apologised to eThekwini residents for the likely impact of the strike. He has kept them updated on the the percentage of workers absent; reported on strike-related incidents, explained contingency plans and given residents numbers to call if they are experiencing problems.

The Witness sent an e-mail to the city hall asking after the mayor.

Spokesperson Brian Zuma said Ndlela was caught up in the crisis resulting from the shooting of a striker and will respond to residents during an urgent executive committee meeting today.
