BMW trio rob senior cop of his pistol in Wembley

2012-02-15 00:00

A SENIOR police officer in the Hilton radio control room with 37 years of experience in the force was cornered by three men and robbed of his service pistol and personal items on Monday evening.

Colonel Jan Venter was driving along Taunton Road, Wembley, heading home from the Hilton office when he saw that a silver-grey BMW had been parked diagonally across the road, with its boot open, blocking two lanes of traffic.

Venter declined to elaborate, saying he was not allowed to speak to the media.

Sources aware of the incident said Venter stopped nearby as he could not pass.

“He put on his blue lights and siren and signalled the occupants to come to him.”

The source said the men approached him and one pulled out a firearm and pointed it at his head. They demanded to know where his firearm was.

“The officer told them that he did not have his firearm with him.

“The firearm was in the briefcase on the seat next to him with other personal and professional documents.”

The men took the briefcase and Venter’s car keys and fled.

Venter found the car keys a few metres from the scene.

The source said it was clear from the way the car had been parked that the occupants were there to hijack anyone who had showed up at that moment.

It was unfortunate that Venter had arrived when he did.

Police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge confirmed the incident and said a case of robbery with a firearm was being investigated. He said no arrests had been made and the investigation was continuing.
