BMX 2010: mayor on board for world race

2009-07-21 00:00

MSUNDUZI Mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo has pledged her support for the 2010 UCI BMX World Championships scheduled for the city for August by agreeing to take on the role of honorary president for the event’s organising committee.

Hlatshwayo told The Witness she was honoured when approached to take up the position last Friday and was very excited about the upcoming cycling events.

Alec Lanferna of Real Events, who are organisers of the biking events, said they were very happy the mayor has decided to come on board.

“Pietermaritzburg has embraced not only international cycling events in a big way, but also local cycling events and to have … the mayor pledge her personal support for the BMX World Championships is amazing,” he said.

Lanferna said that without support from the city and staff of the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Department, they would not have been able to host the cycling events as successfully as they have.

From August 20 to 22, the city will play host to the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup.

Many of the world’s leading racers are expected to take part and this event will be a preview of what people can expect at next year’s World Championships.
