BOOM! Afridi signs with Dolphins.

BOOM-BOOM fever is coming to Kingsmead, after the Dolphins confirmed their sensational signing of Pakistan superstar, Shahid Afridi for the Pro20 campaign.

Afridi needs no introduction to ardent cricket lovers, and he should be a major hit with supporters.

He has had a major impact in recent international tournaments, especially the World20 event where he sparked a Pakistan revival that eventually landed the trophy.

An international at the age of just 16, Afridi has done it all in limited overs cricket.

Even in today’s world of rush-hour cricket, his 37-ball century against Sri Lanka still defies belief.

And, lest we forget, he is a wily leg-spinner/slider/seamer when the mood takes him — as the Proteas found out in England.

Besides his box office billing, the new Afridi has been praised as a senior figure in the Pakistan dressing room, willing to mentor the next generation.

Speaking to The Witness yesterday, Dolphins manager of playing affairs Jay Naidoo said they were very excited about the deal.

“Obviously when a player of that calibre is involved, it takes a few weeks to negotiate. But we are very happy to have agreed a deal with one of the world’s most exciting players.

“Besides what he offers on the playing field, I am sure he will be of great assistance in developing the younger players in our squad.”

The Dolphins, who came close in last season’s Pro20 competition, will have an enviable top-order, with Afridi a possible opening partner to the equally devastating Loots Bosman.

The former Protea is in Maritzburg, as he works his way back to full fitness, and he showed glimpses of his ability during a fluent 58 yesterday for KZN Coastals.

Afridi and Bosman is a billing that could take the breath away, and Kingsmead will be no place for the faint-hearted towards the end of the season.

The Dolphins have been like a housewife at a farmer’s market in the transfer market.

Bosman, Andrew Hall and perhaps even Claude Henderson have all landed in the shopping basket.

But ‘Boom-Boom’ is certainly the biggest buy of the lot, and his arrival in February is eagerly anticipated.
