Baby dies as storm blows roof off house

2009-01-06 00:00

A baby born on New Year’s Eve died in Caluza in the greater Edendale area during Saturday’s storm, after the roof of the house he was in was blow off.

However, it is not clear how Bongeka Malwane died.

His mother, Nunu Malwane (20), said the roof of the room in which little Bongeka was sleeping in was blown off.

Malwane said she does not know what killed her baby boy as she clutched him tight, protecting him from flying debris.

“I noticed that my baby was not breathing while we were clearing up. He had been quiet during the storm, but I did not think much about his silence because he loved to sleep. But I then noticed that his mouth and hands had turned purple,” said Malwane.

She said she has not yet received the results of the post mortem to determine what caused her child’s death.

Malwene, who has two other children aged three and one, shares her home with 12 other people, among whom there is one breadwinner.

On their visit to the areas hardest hit by the storm, KwaZulu-Natal Premier S’bu Ndebele and Msunduzi Mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo paid the Malwane family a visit.

Malwane’s aunt, Khethiwe Malwane, said Ndebele told them the municipality will assist with the arrangements and costs of the funeral.

Ward councillor Bonginkosi Mazibuko said that the Malwane family plans to bury baby Bongeka tomorrow and that the municipality should have completed the funeral preparations by then.
