‘Baby dumping’ on the increase in city

2011-09-13 00:00

A SECOND baby girl has been found alive after being dumped in the city, less than 24 hours after another baby was found in a toilet in doctor’s rooms in the city centre.

Schoolchildren found the newborn baby girl dumped near White Road at the Grange yesterday morning.

Police spokesperson Joey Jeevan said the children noticed a black plastic bag near the road and phoned the police and paramedics.

The three-kilogram girl is under observation in Edendale Hospital and is reported to be in a healthy condition.

Rene Morcom, who co-ordinates a baby safe in Pietermaritzburg — a place for mothers to leave infants they cannot care for — said they have dealt with 40 children this year, of which 15 were abandoned.

She said some women use the baby safe and others call for counselling.

“Baby dumping is not recognised as a problem, while it is escalating in the city. That needs to be prevented,” said Morcom.

“It takes a brave person to ask for help. We are here to help. They must come forward.

“We know some are suffering from post-natal depression and that once they are cured they will love their babies.”

Morcom said a baby safe is being planned for Edendale to help the women of that area.

She said some of the problems that lead to women dumping their children are the result of abuse, social issues and age.

“It’s not that they are bad mothers but because of the situations they are faced with.”

Morcom said the baby safe is at the corner of Langalibalele and George streets in the city centre.

Jeevan said a case of child abandonment is being investigated. Anyone with information about the child or mother is asked to call the Alexandra Road police station at 033 845 7700/22.
