Baby killed in mystery fire, family still in shock

2011-09-09 00:00

THE family of a four-month-old boy who burnt to death in the Bob Mattison area on Wednesday are still in shock and don’t know how the fire started.

Phumulaphi Msimanga, mother of four-month-old Lindokuhle, said she was in the kitchen with her mother at about 8 pm on Wednesday when she smelt smoke.

“I left the baby on the bed after I had fed him and changed him,” Msimanga said.

“I went to the kitchen to join my mother to prepare food for us.

“A short while later I smelled smoke and jumped out of the kitchen.

“I found that the bedroom was on fire. I cried for help,” she said.

Msimanaga said she tried to enter the house but the fire and smoke blocked her way.

She said the police and fire fighters responded quickly, but were too late to rescue the child.

Lindokuhle’s grandmother, Buyelaphi Msimanga, said they are appealing to anyone who can help them with burial expenses.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said that when police got to the scene the Msunduzi fire department was already extinguishing flames.

One of the rooms was completely gutted by the fire.

A short while later police officers from the Pietermaritzburg search-and-rescue unit removed the burnt remains of Lindokuhle from the rubble inside the room.

Jeevan said that no foul play is suspected and the circumstances of the incident are being investigated.
