DENZEL Washington and Ryan Reynolds star in the action thriller, Safe House, which opens at CineCentre in Pietermaritzburg today. The film tells the story of rookie CIA operative Matt Weston (Reynolds), who is just waiting for the perfect opportunity to prove himself — no easy task when you’ve been cooped up in an empty Cape Town safe house for a whole year.

But when he learns that former agent Tobin Frost (Washington) has been captured after nearly a decade on the run and is about to become Weston’s one and only guest at the safe house, the fledgling agent is determined to handle the situation like a true professional. Unfortunately, by selling American secrets to countries like North Korea, Frost has made more than his fair share of enemies in high places, and shortly after he arrives at the safe house, all hell breaks loose.

Also new to Pietermaritzburg is the re-release of George Lucas’s Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace in 3D.

The prequel, which first hit cinema screens 22 years ago, takes viewers back to the beginning, when Darth Vader was a hopeful nine-year-old boy named Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi a determined young Jedi knight.

This first chapter, which is rich in art, design, costumes, architecture and technology, follows Anakin’s journey as he pursues his dreams and confronts his fears in the midst of a galaxy in turmoil.

Other films still showing in Pietermaritzburg are: Machine Gun Preacher ; Sherlock Holmes : A Game of Shadows ; We Bought A Zoo ; Seeking Justice ; A Little Bit of Heaven ; Trespass ; and Jack and Jill .

Opening in Durban this weekend is Martin Scorsese’s stunning 3D film, Hugo , which has deservedly gained 11 Oscar nominations. Set in thirties’ Paris, it tells the story of Hugo, an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station, and is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton.

You can also catch a pre-release screening of the Oscar-nominated My Week With Marilyn, starring Michelle Williams, in which Colin Clark, an employee of Sir Laurence Olivier, documents the tense interaction between Olivier and Monroe during production of The Prince and the Showgirl . Also at Cinema Nouveau Gateway is the Oscar-nominated biopic, The Iron Lady, starring Meryl Streep, which looks at the life of Britain’s first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher.

The new Bollywood film on circuit is Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu , which tells the story of an uptight architect and quick-witted hairstylist who marry in Las Vegas after one drink too many.

Another must-see of opera fans is the Metropolitan Opera’s The Enchanted Island. Featuring baroque music from Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, Leclair, and more. In keeping with the music, the libretto draws from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Tempest.
