Back yard a dumpsite

2011-01-31 00:00

THE Newholmes Hotel back yard has been turned into a dumpsite as owner Ravin Maharaj expressed his anger with the Msunduzi Municipality for failing to repair the rubbish skip which has been broken for the past two years.

Speaking to The Witness, Maharaj said that instead of fixing the skip, the municipality issued him a fine because community members were throwing rubbish into it. “It has been broken for two years and I have reported the incident but I have been pushed from pillar to post by municipal waste management when trying to get the green bin repaired,” said Maharaj.

He said: “Every month I pay R500 to the municipality for my green bin but they do not bother to send anyone. Initially I understood that the municipality was going through financial constraints, but now I am tired of paying other people when the municipality should be collecting refuse. I have been phoning the waste-management department for far too long now.

“What frustrates me the most is that some of the community members who complain about the level of filth in the hotel back yard are also responsible for dumping,” said Maharaj.

He said that he has the addresses of some people who dump in his back yard. “The hotel back yard has been turned into a dump site by the community members because they see the dirt lying around,” he added.

Msunduzi Municipality acting spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said the waste management department is currently attending to the matter.

“A contractor will be appointed shortly to repair the skips, including the one at the Newholmes Hotel, but in the meantime refuse is being collected,” added Madonda.
