Bad rermake of classic

2008-10-02 08:05

Ram Gopal Verma has always attempted bold subjects like Satya, Company and Sarkar but this time he has attempted to play with aag (fire). He was obsessed with making a remake of Ramesh Sippy's Sholay, which has nothing that leaves a lasting impression on his audience. After watching RGV Ki Aag and the classic Sholay, it's like comparing chalk and cheese.

Narisma (Mohanlal) is an honest police officer who was instrumental in the capturing of nihilistic gang leader Babban (Amitabh Bachchan). In the process, Narisima ends up accidentally killing Babban's younger brother. Babban vows to avenge his brother's death and escapes from prison.

Babban kills Narisma's father, wife and brother. The only person who survives this massacre is Narisma's sister-in-law Durga Devi (Sushmita Sen). A furious Narisma is hell-bent on getting revenge and hires two local goons, Heero (Ajay Devgan) and Raj (Prashant Raj), to capture Babban.

I cannot continue to compare RGV Ki Aag to the incomparable Sholay, but nevertheless the film continues with romance, violence, psychosis and an original Sholay plot.

Amitabh Bachchan as Babban is outstanding, but I must stress he comes nowhere close to the late Amjad Khan, who essayed the original role of Gabbar.

Mohanlal gives a superb performance with a tailor-made role. Ajay Devgan does not strike a chord, and Prakash Raj should make this film his last one as he cannot act. Sushmita Sen and Nisha Kothari shine.

Ramu's direction is a colossal disappointment - there is no cohesive linear flow in his story.

The younger generation should watch this film once, but for me once was too much.
