Bafana captain battling injury

JOHANNESBURG — Bafana Bafana captain Steven Pienaar is battling to recover from injury ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations clash against Egypt on June 5.

Pienaar said on Twitter that he was hoping to “shake off” his groin injury. He is currently holidaying in Morocco.

The midfielder was hurt playing for Tottenham in an English Premier League match against Liverpool two weeks ago. He was cleared just days before his last international, at home against Egypt in March. In February during training, he suffered dizzy spells after a clash of heads with Spurs and Bafana team-mate Bongani Khumalo.

“I hope I can shake off this injury and be able to be fit for the game. Fingers crossed,” Pienaar tweeted.

The Egyptian Football Federation has switched the game to the Cairo Military Academy Stadium, which holds only 22 000. It had been scheduled for the 76 000-seat Cairo International stadium.
