Bafana side selected for Oz, NZ tour

2014-04-09 00:00

UNDER-FIRE Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund has announced a small but familiar 18-man squad that will travel to Australia and New Zealand for international friendly matches towards the end of next month.

The squad, announced yesterday, included Mpumalanga Black Aces midfielder Themba Zwane — on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns — who has been punted all season as a future international by his current coach and former Bafana mentor Clive Barker.

Zwane has been instrumental in Aces’ success in the PSL this season, and he joins a midfield alongside regulars Siphiwe Tshabalala, Kagisho Dikgacoi and Thulani Serero.

“I’m really happy to be given a chance to represent my country. I think if I work hard, my stay in the Bafana team will be a success,” Zwane told the SoccerLaduma website yesterday.

Igesund will be without his midfield workhorse Dean Furman, who continues to recover from a groin operation.

Bafana play the 2014 Fifa World Cup-bound Australia at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney on May 26 [11.30 am, SA time] before jetting off to their clash with the All Whites in Auckland on May 30 [9.30 am, SA time].

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune, Ronwen Williams. Defenders: Anelel Ngcongca, Thabo Nthethe, Buhle Mkhwanazi, Siyanda Xulu, Thabo Matlaba, Tsepo Masilela. Midfielders: Kagisho Dikgacoi, Andile Jali, Bongani Zungu, Themba Zwane, Oupa Manyisa, Thulani Serero, Ayanda Patosi, Siphiwe Tshabalala. Strikers: Bernard Parker, Tokelo Rantie.
