Bafana song: Underberg muso wins nationwide competition

A KWAZULU-NATAL musician, Don Clarke, has won a competition to compose the official song for Bafana Bafana.

After months of sifting through 4 300 entries for the right sound to represent Bafana during the World Cup, the judges selected five finalists, three from KZN.

The five songs were aired on all the SABC radio and TV stations, allowing listeners and viewers to vote for their favourite.

Clarke (55), who also penned a winner in a competition to find a song to represent the Splashy Fen experience, was ecstatic on Wednesday when he learnt that his song, titled Kick It Up! was the overall winner of the SABC contest.

Hailed as “an award-winning and near-legendary figure on the local music scene” on the Splashy Fen website, Clarke has played in bands for more than 25 years, run a Durban recording studio, “and penned some of this country’s biggest-ever smash songs”, including the PJ Powers hit Sanbonani.

Kelvin Naidoo a member of runners-up band Jude, a group of youngsters from Northdale, congratulated their neighbour from Underberg for having won the Song for Bafana contest, saying they wish him well and everything of the best.

Naidoo said Jue will be recording an album after their “great experience” during the competition.
