Bail: high court interpreter up for fraud

2010-05-06 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG-based high court interpreter Graphic “GG” Khoza appeared briefly in the magistrate’s court yesterday, in connection with a charge of fraud, and was released on R1 000 bail.

Khoza is charged with fraudulently claiming R16 660 from the Justice Department for travelling costs between Pongola and Pietermaritzburg.

The charge sheet alleges that Khoza claimed for travel costs incurred in his private vehicle when he, in fact, got a lift with a colleague in a state vehicle.

The fraud was allegedly perpetrated between March 1 and March 26 this year.

He was not asked to plead when he appeared before Magistrate Mishi Singh yesterday.

State prosecutor Mxolisi Hodi did not oppose bail, but requested that Khoza be ordered to refrain from discussing the case with “anyone other than his attorney” as he could come into contact with state witnesses.

He said Khoza had not been suspended from duty “thus far”.

The court granted Khoza bail for R1 000 and warned him not to interfere with any state witnesses or potential state witnesses.

The case was postponed to June 7.
