Balfour mum over Yengeni

2007-11-28 00:00

Balfour was caught off guard while visiting Kokstad yesterday when asked about the progress of the drunken driving case involving Yengeni.

Yengeni was arrested in Cape Town on Sunday after swerving his black BMW on to an island. He is alleged to have been driving drunk.

The incident happened while Yengeni is still serving parole, in terms of which he may not drink alcohol.

“I have no comment about Yengeni’s matter as I gave instructions that the matter be investigated,” said Balfour, adding that he is still awaiting the report.

Balfour’s visit to Kokstad was to launch Operation Vala, a project aimed at intensifying security at the Bhongweni Super Maximum Prisons. “We know that they [inmates] like escaping towards December because they want to spend Christmas with their families,” he said.

Balfour said that his department is rolling out about R1 billion worth of monitors and high-security fencing with motion detectors and cameras.
