Ballito Beach Festival: freediving and free music

2011-07-02 00:00

SOUTH AFRICAN freediving record holder,Hanli Prinsloo, will dive daily during the Mr Price Pro Ballito Beach Festival next week.

Prinsloo will host the ‘I Am Water’ ocean conservation fundraiser as well as daily breath-holding challenges, free workshops and public question-and-answer sessions.

She holds 11 South African records in freediving, having swum on a single breath to a depth of 63 metres and having held her breath for five minutes 39 seconds. She said, “My involvement with the ocean taught me so much, but it is painfully obvious that the ocean needs us even more than we need her. As vast and majestic as she seems, she is as vulnerable as ever. Overfishing, pollution and climate change are some of the most important issues, and if we are to enjoy our oceans for years to come, we need to do something.”

The Mr Price Pro Ballito surfing competition will be held from Monday to July 10. The world’s top surfers, including defending champ Jordy Smith, will compete for a share of R1,7 million in prize money.

The festival will feature two free music concerts presented by 5FM and the KwaDukuza Municipality and featuring South Africa’s top bands on July 8 and 9.
