Ballito and Tongaat both a little safer after police chase down four

2014-01-24 00:00

A TIP-OFF to the police that a silver-grey Audi had been spotted at the scene of an attempted house robbery at Ballito and an earlier housebreaking in the Westbrook area in Tongaat yesterday led to police arresting four suspects who have subsequently been linked to even more crimes in the area.

The police are now on the trail of one more suspect, who ran off into the bushes after jumping out of the car when he noticed they were being pursued, said police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane.

Officers of the Umhlali K9 unit at Tongaat police station followed up information that the Audi was used as a getaway car in an attempted house robbery at Ballito and a housebreaking at Westbrook.

While patrolling they spotted the Audi in the area and gave chase.

During the chase, four suspects managed to jumped out of the vehicle and abscond into nearby bushes.

The driver tried to outrun the police, but was overtaken and arrested. An unlicensed 9mm pistol was found in the car. He was charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The K9 unit found and arrested three suspects who had run into the bushes, but the fourth suspect is still at large — for now. The suspects are linked to several house robberies around Umhlali, Tongaat, Ballito and even in the Pietermaritzburg area.

The men — aged between 20 and 40 years — will appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court soon.
