Banned: no World Cup venues provided by eThekwini for excluded street vendors

STREETNET International, an alliance of street vendors, has criticised eThekwini Municipality for failing to provide alternative trading venues for them, as they will be banned from the one-kilometre wide exclusion zone around the Moses Mabhida stadium, reserved for companies contracted to Fifa.

StreetNet said Durban should adopt a policy like Johannesburg, which is hosting several events where approved traders will be able to sell their products.

StreetNet’s provincial spokesman Gaby Bikombo said members met with city officials on Monday to discuss the exclusion of street traders from around the stadium.

Bikombo said the city should have consulted with traders before signing the Host Cities agreement with FIFA.

“We want to work with the municipality so that traders have a chance to benefit from the World Cup,” he said. “There was no consultation with us…”
