Barging cop suspended from driving state cars

2015-03-17 00:00

A SENIOR Pietermaritzburg policeman who was arrested at the weekend and charged with reckless and negligent driving and drunk driving will only appear in court at the end of August.

The officer, who was reportedly driving a police vehicle, allegedly reversed into another car at a garage at the Victoria Road/Peter Kerchoff Street intersection. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan confirmed yesterday that the officer has been warned to appear in court on August 31.

Delays in cases involving allegations of drunk driving are routine as the state has to wait for blood alcohol test results before the case can be enrolled.

Jeevan told The Witness the officer has been “suspended from driving state vehicles” and will face other internal disciplinary action in the wake of the incident, in which he allegedly collided with a car belonging to the daughter of local attorney Charmane Pillay.
