Barrel of Fun: Win wine for a lifetime in Epic treasure hunt

2011-05-07 00:00

YOU may not be granted immortality, but finding the KWV Epic of Everlasting golden barrel could give you the chance to win a lifetime of wine from Laborie.

A treasure hunt is being staged across the country based on the Epic of Gilgamesh, a hero who searches for immortality.

Using the tale, KWV has come up with a riddle for each city in which the wine and brandy manufacturer will exhibit its collection of Cecil Skotnes’s commissioned works.

The Epic of Gilgamesh is the first literary work to mention vineyards. Armed with a clue, the epic and knowledge of the city, residents can then search for the hidden barrel.

The first contestant to find it will be invited to an awards ceremony in Paarl on December 14, 2011, at Laborie Wine Farm.

A draw will take place, and the winner will go home with the “Fountain of Life”, a 15-litre bottle of wine which will be refilled for the winner’s lifetime.

A CLUE will be made available on the Epic of Everlasting website, and the first person to e-mail a photo of him- or herself with the barrel to the address given will win. The photo must be taken in the place where the barrel is hidden. The hunt will run for 10 days from Monday, May 9. The city’s winner will be announced at the opening of the exhibition, at the Tatham Gallery the day after the entries close. The clue will be posted on Monday at
