Basketball: College give Alexandra a run for their money

2010-02-23 00:00

WITH the three large independent schools on half-term break, there was only one game that took place on Saturday and that was between Maritzburg College and Alexandra, which was won 105-69 by College. Carter played earlier in the week against DHS.

College played their last local fixture of the first term on another blistering hot February day. They will travel to the St John’s Basketball Tournament in Johannesburg for their last fixtures.

Early baskets were exchanged, resulting in an evenly contested first quarter, with the lead changing a number of times. At the end of the quarter Alex held a slender lead.

Alex came out strongly at the beginning of the second quarter, extending their lead, but with College countering from strong defensive positions they gradually drew even and then pulled away to lead 48-37 at the halfway stage.

With Alex tiring in the stifling heat and with College’s M. L. Mabaso and E. Adjei outstanding, College pulled well clear.

The final tally of 105 to 69 in favour of College was testament to their resilience and fitness in the heat.

Carter players were put into the lion’s den at DHS and were literally mauled. Carter lost 26-101 in this one-sided contest against arguably the strongest KZN basketball school.
