Batsmen excel on third day

2012-10-02 00:00

THE third day of the 53rd Oppenheimer Michaelmas Week produced arguably the best batting of the festival to date with three centuries and 15 half-centuries.

Bowlers toiled for their wickets as 12 sides scored over 200 runs.

The best bowling performance was that of Yaseen Valli of KES, who was the only bowler to take four wickets. He also made 78 in the KES total of 344 for six against Hilton.

Shaylen Pillay, also from KES and a SA U19 player, made 116 in the same match.

Tim Guise-Brown (Martizburg College) made 110 off 110 balls, but it was not enough as Affies timed their innings to perfection to win by five wickets with just over two overs to spare.

The third century maker and top scorer of the Festival in the first three days was Taariq Booley (DHS), who made 122 in their total of 243 for four against Hudson Park, a match that they won by 97 runs.

Two matches that went down to the wire were the five-run win by Northwood against St Davids and Westlake’s win against St Albans by seven runs in a high-scoring game.

Only four schools have won all three their matches. King Edward, in addition to their win against Hilton, beat Glenwood and DHS. Affies beat hosts Maritzburg College to add to the scalps of Northwood and Hilton on the first two days. The third unbeaten school were Grey College, who beat Westlake and St Charles before winning against Glenwood. Pretoria Boys High added the KZN Development XI to their two previous wins against Maritzburg College and Northwood.

The best results by a KZN school was two wins by Clifton. This was on the first two days. They were then set back by illness to two players and an injury and had to call for a replacement before their match against St Andrews, which they lost by 53 runs.
