Battle at the bottom of the log

2013-05-17 00:00

AFTER suffering big defeats last time out, both Maritzburg Collegians and UKZN Impi will be desperate for better results tomorrow.

The focus in the KZN capital will be on the Fidelity Security Moor Cup Premier Division match between Collegians and Harlequins, which kicks off at 3.30 pm at Woodburn Stadium.

Both teams are at the wrong end of the log — sixth-placed Quins on four points and seventh-placed Collegians on one point. At the start of the season each side would have targeted the Woodburn match as a must-win. Considering what is at stake and how close both sides are to eighth and last place on the log, this will be a no-holds-barred clash of will and skill.

Meanwhile, the UKZN Impi take on Durban Collegians at the Howard College campus in Durban at 3.30 pm. The parking entrance is in Princess Alice Avenue, just off Rick Turner Road (old Francois Road).

This is a key match for the Impi as third-placed Varsity College and the fourth-placed Impi are on 16 points, but Varsity College have a better points difference.

With Varsity College facing SA club champs and rampant log leaders College Rovers, it gives the Impi a chance to edge ahead of their close rivals.

However, Durban Collegians are in second place, just one point behind Rovers, and have a powerful pack as well as accomplished halfbacks and pacey runners out wide, so the Impi will have to be on top of their game to win this one.

This special UKZN Rugby Day is in aid of the Jes Foord Foundation and UKZN’s Rugby against Rape campaign, and all the UKZN teams will be participating.

The day kicks off at 9.30 am with a UKZN women’s rugby tournament and continues throughout the day with all seven UKZN teams participating in league matches. Jes Foord will give a presentation at 5 pm on the facts surrounding rape before the first teams kick off for the Jess Foord Cup at 5.10 pm.
