Battle for position as Impi take on Quins

2013-06-07 00:00

THE fifth-placed University of KwaZulu-Natal Impi will be looking to build on last weekend’s morale-boosting home victory over Maritzburg Collegians when they take on hosts Harlequins tonight in the 8.30 pm Fidelity Security Moor Cup Premier Division match on the Bluff in Durban.

Meanwhile, it doesn’t get any easier for bottom club Maritzburg Collegians when they face an in-form Varsity College, who lie in third place on the log, in tonight’s 8.30 pm clash on Woodburn’s number two field.

Collegians suffered the disappointment of losing narrowly to Zululand Rhinos a fortnight ago and that has ultimately lifted the Empangeni-based side off the foot of the table (albeit by the slenderest of points differences over Collegians), the Zululanders having spent virtually the entire first round in that unfortunate position.

For the men in red, black and white — who have been their own worst enemies in that a lack of self-belief has seen them snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in key matches — the onus is now upon them to claw their way back in order to avoid this season’s wooden spoon.

Third-placed Varsity College have experienced good results of late and have five wins from eight starts while Collegians have yet to taste the sweet nectar of victory.

Yet there is still much to play for. Collegians still have a realistic chance of finishing in sixth place in this eight-team premier league while the fifth-placed Impi also have a fighting chance of realising their start-of-season goal of finishing in third spot.

Impi captain and number eight Andre Greyvenstein told The Witness yesterday that while it is never easy playing on the Bluff, he is confident his side would be able to quell the Quins challenge.

The Collegians brains trust will be looking for another strong performance from their admirable pack of forwards, a workmanlike showing from their back division and a drastic improvement in self-belief against Varsity College.

Premier Division (8.30 pm unless stated): Crusaders vs Durban Collegians (8 pm); Harlequins vs UKZN Impi; PMB Collegians vs Varsity College (Woodburn number two field); Zululand Rhinos vs College Rovers. Reserves play the curtain-raiser.
