Bay United clobber Thanda Royal Zulu out of promotion

2011-06-13 00:00

DEFENSIVE tactics came back to haunt Thanda Royal Zulu when they were clobbered 4-1 by a rampant Bay United side seeking to claw their way back into the Absa Premiership next season.

On a cold Saturday night here before a sizeable chanting crowd made up of both teams’ supporters, Thanda were made to rue their decision not to attack Bay, which led to a scoreless draw in their first-leg National First Division Promotional Play-offs on Wednesday in Richards Bay.

Thanda coach Mlungisi “Professor” Ngubane, whose tactics left much to be desired in both matches, strove to catch his opponents with all out attacking play, in the hope of the home side cracking under pressure.

Initially it looked like his plan would work, as Thanda shot ahead — though fortuitously — through left back Sipho Made’s long-range free kick, which Bay keeper Modiri Morudi amateurishly failed to clinch.

However, their lead was short-lived as the home side capitalised on holes in Thanda’s defence — Phumelela “Ace” Bhengu equalising with a well-taken finish. Still battling to get into the rhythm and retaliate, Thanda were stunned by a Brice Aka header before half time.

From then onwards, Thanda could not fight back — Bhengu once more capitalised on their shaky defence by firing his side to a 3-1 lead.

It was game over when substitute Lunga Zondi hit the final nail in Thanda’s coffin late in the game.
