Bay veterans win Shaka Challenge

2008-08-04 00:00

Veterans Nigel and Mike Stevens won Saturday’s RBM Shaka Challenge in Richards Bay from the junior boat of Shaun Austen and Donovan Kennedy, making it a local one-two for the Richards Bay community.

Mark and Angelique Mulder were the first out of town boat in third place. The “winning veteran followed by a junior” pattern was repeated in the K1’s with Danie du Plessis taking first place ahead of U16 Desmond Peel. There were no women’s boats entered in the main race. Tarcy and Billy Harker won the seven strong Paddle Ski section.

A relatively small entry of 89 paddlers turned out for the 21st running of the race on Saturday — all 21 years with the same sponsor, Richards Bay Minerals. With the dropping of flat water events as Dusi qualifiers and the current high cost of travelling, the race has become a more community-based event, with around 95% of the participants coming from the Richards Bay/Eshowe/Empangeni area.

Raced over a shortened 17-km course due to the low tide, in and around the Richards Bay harbour and the Meerensee marina and canal, the race started at 9 am on Saturday and included a seven-kilometre short course event for novices and a guppy race.
