Be inspired by nature

2008-02-05 00:00

A NEW project for artists starts during February with an invitation to come and draw in the Pietermaritzburg Botanic Gardens on Sunday mornings. This is the idea of artist Kobie Venter and Penny Hatting of the Strelitzia Room restaurant in the gardens. Previously, Hatting ran the restaurant in the Tatham Art Gallery, and says she is missing the art and artists.

So she has been encouraging artists to take advantage of the garden’s safe natural environment and lovely variety of vistas, water areas, forms, textures and colours. An added interest is that the plane tree avenue is 100 years old this year.

To join in, you need no experience as an artist and your work will not be judged. Your creative mornings can be solitary and meditational or more social if you choose.

Venter and other artists will be around from 10 am to 1 pm on Sundays in February, regardless of the weather. As you need to walk from the car park, simple materials like a sketch book, pencil and something to sit on may be adequate.

“There can be comfort in sitting against a sturdy tree trunk, drawing ducks on a pond, but your imagination is the limit,” says Venter. “Some artists will just bring card and a glue stick for making a collage or mandala from natural materials. Let nature be the teacher.”

The cost to get into the gardens is R10 (R5 concessions). For more information, phone Venter at 033 344 3211 or Hatting at 083 225 0238 or 033 344 2207.
