Be part of flame lighting ceremony

2014-02-18 00:00

JOHN Hall (race director — Maritzburg Marathon), Angie Narayanan (fundraising manager — Community Chest) and Michael Deagan (executive director — Community Chest) getting their candles ready for the Flame Lighting Ceremony. The Witness, Maritzburg City Marathon and Community Chest invite you to be part of the Flame Lighting Ceremony on Thursday at 5.30 pm. This special ceremony is to celebrate and be part of lighting the official Marathon Flame. The flame is the official symbol of the Association of Marathons and Distance Races (Aims) and is lit at the Tomb of the Marathon Warriors at which the marathon distance was launched for the first modern Olympics in 1896. This is the third year the flame will arrive in South Africa and be lit by the mayor of Pietermaritzburg. All citizens of PMB are encouraged to enjoy this opportunity. The Maritzburg Marathon will be held on Sunday, February 23. To show your support, buy a candle for R5 and go to the Carbineers Drill Hall. All proceeds from the candle sales will be for the benefit of 76 charities supported by Community Chest. The chest is grateful to The Witness, Maritzburg Marathon, Willowton Group, The Candle Dipping Shop, Inspect A Pest, CPW Printers, and Vuma 103 FM for making this sale of candles possible. Contact Angie Narayanan on 033 394 1031/ for more info and to order candles.
