Beastly injury blow for Sharks

2012-01-30 00:00

THE Sharks will not go shopping for a high-profile replacement for injured Springbok loosehead prop Beast Mtawarira.

The Sharks have suffered a massive blow with the Beast breaking a bone in his ankle during a contact session at practice and CEO Brian van Zyl confirmed yesterday that the muscular prop will be out for three months.

“He is to undergo surgery and will have a pin put in his ankle. He will probably miss eight or nine games. It is most unfortunate but we do have a couple of willing and talented young props in our squad,” said Van Zyl.

Van Zyl said that the Sharks wanted to fill the gap from within the squad rather than by contracting another player, and young Dale Chadwick, who performed admirably in last year’s Currie Cup, is an obvious replacement.

“Chadwick is talented and immensely strong and we also have Wiehahn Herbst who can play on both sides of the scrum. There is a possibility that we may draft in a prop from one of the other franchises at some stage if we believe we lack depth,” Van Zyl added.

Ironically the Sharks released experienced prop Eugene van Staden from his contract last week. Van Staden was on loan to Biarritz during the close season, but he has now been contracted on a full-time basis by the French club.

The Sharks have an internal trial this weekend and then meet Boland (at home) and Eastern Province (away) over the following weekends. They open their Super Rugby campaign against the Bulls in Pretoria on February 24.
