Beating the bulge

EVER looked down at those bulging rolls sticking out over your belt and wished you could get rid of them?

If you thought losing weight was an unachievable challenge, think again. A Pietermaritzburg Weigh-Less finalist says its possible after he triumphantly lost an incredible 40,8 kg within seven months.

Treasury department senior manager Mthokozisi Ndumo (36) weighed 124,6 kg before joining a programme that assisted him to lose weight.

This mission started when his wife, Nomusa Ndumo, was uncomfortable with her weight and roped him in with her attempts to shed some kilograms. They both began their journey by jogging, which on its own, did not produce the desired results.

Ndumo was also told by his family doctor that his blood pressure and cholesterol levels were too high, but Ndumo never saw his hefty size as a problem.

“My wife started worrying me about my weight until I joined the programme which turned my life around,” he said.

The married couple joined Weigh-Less, a health programme designed to help people with health problems.

They were teamed with a personal trainer who mentored and introduced them to a 10-step programme that included changing their diet, new routines and special exercises.

“In the first two weeks, I lost at least four kilograms. My doctor gave me compliments for that,” he said.

Ndumo said he started gaining weight when he was in university but his weight never seemed to affect him.

“Before, I used to wear a size XXXL T-shirt and a size 46 pants, but now I am happy to say I wear large in T-shirt sizes and medium in pants sizes. Before my shopping was determined by what could fit me, not what I liked in the store,” said Ndumo.

Ndumo’s great weight achievement landed him among the seven finalists of the 38th Woman and Man of the Year competition to be held in Durban at the end of the month.

“It’s possible to lose weight no matter what plus size you are,” he said.

Treasury department secretary Pravisha Mangaroo couldn’t believe it when a new-sized senior manager walked into the office, looking much younger.

“It was a very quick, drastic change that no one could believe,” she told Weekend Witness.
