Beer bellies off for govt employees

2010-05-12 00:00

BEER bellies are soon to be a thing of the past for government employees in KwaZulu-Natal, if the Work and Play Wellness Programme (WPWP) is successful.

WPWP is a provincial programme that seeks to encourage active, healthy and productive public employees as part of employee health and wellness initiatives.

It was first launched in 2009 by KZN Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize, who envisaged a yearly programme supported by ongoing sustainable programmes.

According to a 1998 paper on Sport and Recreation, “sport can contribute to lowering tension, fatigue and general anxiety in the workplace and it increases productivity”. It proposes that workers clubs be introduced to facilitate participation.

The second Inter-Departmental games are scheduled to take place on May 14 and 15 at Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg. The semi-finals and finals are on Saturday.
