Benni’s big chance to impress

2012-07-28 00:00

JOHANNESBURG — South Africa coach Gordon Igesund says he will consider Benni McCarthy for selection if the Orlando Pirates hitman does his job on the field.

McCarthy, Bafana’s record scorer with 31 strikes, netted 13 goals in all competitions last term, helping Bucs claim Premiership, MTN8 and Telkom Knockout honours.

Igesund insists form will dictate his selection policy.

“Every single player who is playing in our Premier League now, if he is performing and doing a good job, or scoring goals, regardless if his name is Benni McCarthy or Joe Soap or Mabhuti Khenyeza — will be considered,” Igesund said in The Sowetan.

“So it’s not about Benni, or one particular player, it’s a pool of players we have in our country who are all playing at a high level.”

McCarthy, with 79 caps, will get a chance to impress Igesund today when Pirates contest the Carling Cup title with Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.
