Bentham top scores as DGC take title

DURBAN Girls’ College (DGC), led by captain and top goal-scorer Charlotte Bentham, captured the annual waterpolo tournament for first team girls sides at St Anne’s DSG in Hilton.

They beat the hosts 4-3 in an absorbing final, scoring the winning goal in the final chukka.

Twelve schools from around South Africa competed at the tournament, DGC making their intent clear from the start.

After a 4-4 draw in the opening match against Durban Girls’ High School, DGC defeated Clarendon 4-2, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School 6-3, Danville Girls’ High School 8-4 and St Dominique’s Girls’ High School 10-2.

These results saw DGC advance to the semi-finals, where they met DSG from Grahamstown. A 4-2 win saw the consistent Durban outfit through to the final where they met St Anne’s.

Bentham scored all four DGC goals in the final, but her side was made to fight hard against a spirited and determined St Anne’s team.

The hosts opened the scoring and were ahead 1-0 after the first chukka. DGC came back hard, scoring twice to snatch the advantage, which was soon cancelled by St Anne’s second goal. Going into the break locked at 2-2, it was still either side’s game for the taking as no team could gain the advantage without the other hitting back.

DGC again went ahead 3-2, only for St Anne’s to hit back and even matters once more.

It all depended on who would produce the goods in the fourth chukka and fortune smiled on DGC, Bentham slamming home what proved to be the winner.

She rounded off a great tournament by being the top goal-scorer, 10 goals ahead of her nearest rival.

Reflecting on her team’s success, Bentham said the team had only one Grade 12 girl and were young, dynamic and enthusiastic.

“Team work and determination are the keys to our success and we can definitely build on making a solid team next year with nearly all the current players still available,” she said.
