Bereaved father’s appeal to youngsters: don’t get into a drag race car, don’t even watch

FOR Devan Sukool, the morning of December 1, 2011 is one he will never forget.

At 2 am, police called Sukool and told him his son had been involved in a serious car accident.

He rushed to St Augustine’s Hospital as his son Teron Lee (22) was wheeled into the trauma unit.

The young man would later succumb to his injuries.

Sukool, now the chairperson of the Asherville Community Policing Forum (CPF), later learned that his son had been a backseat passenger in a vehicle that was allegedly being used for drag racing.

Teron Lee and his three friends had told their families that they would be watching a football match together, but instead had gone out to watch and participate in drag racing.

A few hours later their car crashed on the M19 near Makro — the three other passengers survived the crash.

Sukool said he was not surprised to hear of more accidents allegedly linked to drag racing on the M19.

“I will tell you as a parent and as a member of a CPF that the police are not doing enough to stop drag racing and the deaths that it causes.”

Sukool believes that the stretch of road on the M19, which is coveted by drag racers, is one of the most dangerous roads to drive on.

“My message to any young person is don’t get into a car that is being used for drag racing … don’t even go and watch. I would not want any parent to go through what my family went through. I believe that if you stop the drag racing you will save lives.”
