Bereaved mother’s dilemma

2011-07-12 00:00

STANDING outside the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court yesterday after her brother appeared charged with the murder of her three-year-old son, Thoko Zondi cried as she spoke to The Witness about how confused she felt over her brother’s alleged slaying of her toddler, Mcebisi.

“At least now I know what happened to my son.

“All this time I was thinking of all the horrible things someone was doing to him,” said Zondi.

In the same breath she spoke of her confusion at finding out that her brother was the suspect.

“Though he was the cause of my son’s death, he is also like my son. We are very close because of the tough upbringing we had. How can I put him in jail?” Zondi said.

Simphiwe Zondi (19) was charged with murder after he allegedly confessed on Saturday that he had accidentally dropped his nephew after bathing him on the morning of May 26.

After Thoko Zondi reported Mcebisi missing, police frantically searched the area, with no results.

On Saturday at about 3 pm a neighbour discovered Mcebisi’s decomposed body in a box she had stored until Thursday at the Zondi residence.

Simphiwe’s case was adjourned until today.

Thoko said she accepts that her son’s death was an accident. Surrounded by relatives, Zondi could not hold back her tears.

“He is at the morgue right now. His body is progressively decaying, but I don’t know how I’m going to bury him. I don’t work anymore.

“We are standing here not knowing what the next step will be,” said the distraught mother.
