Berg Rock art site closed

A ROCK art site in the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park World Heritage site has been closed to the public due to vandalism.

Amafa, the provincial heritage body responsible for the rock art, has closed the Lower Mushroom Cave shelter in the Cathedral Peak area because it has been subjected to three attacks by vandals over the last three years.

“To protect such priceless art we have had to take this measure,” said Amafa’s senior rock art officer, Celeste Rossouw.

The paintings at Lower Mushroom Cave, estimated to be about 5 000 years old, were last vandalised in June by security guards employed at the Cathedral Peak Hotel.

They were successfully prosecuted last month and received fines of R1 500.

“It might not sound so much, but given the salaries they earn it had quite an impact,” says Roussouw.

Two nearby rock art sites, Procession Shelter and Brotherton Rock, will remain open.

Rossouw says they are investigating opening other rock art sites in the area and involving the community in their protection.
