Bergville to Ladysmith, a special guest at the mineshaft, and yellow pages track and field at Kings Park

2011-04-05 00:00

THE Mr Price men had a clean sweep of the podium at the annual Bergville to Ladysmith 52 km ultra on Saturday with Prof Mollen, Mlotshwa Ayanda and Herbert Cholera in close quarters for much of the run. Mollen had one hundred metres of an advantage when he crossed the line in three hours seven minutes and 44 seconds. Ayanda had slightly more of a cushion over Cholera who closed the top three in 3:08:54. Richard Dlamini added a win in the 40-49 category for the men in red and white, while ever-green Aubrey Watson had a successful trip from his New Balance Club back to KZN for victory in the 50-59 age group in 3:53:56.

Nedbank’s Kerry Koen won the ladies race, ahead of Robua Filimo of the Bluff Meats Formula One Club in a time of three hours 58 minutes 41 seconds.

The Boxer athletes set the double in the half marathon where Sibonela Duma edged ahead of Samson Tena to break the tape at the Klipbank clubhouse in 69 minutes 34 seconds, only 150 metres clear of the Bluff Meats runner.

Tanith Maxwell gave Boxer the top podium spot in the ladies — only ten minutes slower than Duma. Maxwell is in her final two weeks of preparation for the Virgin London marathon on 17 April where she will be hoping to break through the two-and-a-half hour barrier for the 42km distance.

The Queensburgh Harriers had a special visitor for their Mineshaft half-marathon on Sunday when Zola Pieterse ran the ladies race in Bloemfontein Achillies colours.

Pieterse has been living and coaching in Myrtle Beach in Carolina on the USA east cost, but returned to South Africa as a brand ambassador for Newton Running shoes, who are forefoot running specialists.

The Yellow Pages Track and Field series moves down to Durban this weekend, following the SA Youth, Junior, and Under 23 Championships that were held in Germiston over the weekend.

A team of around 70 athletes attended Germiston bringing back two Gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

Simone Meyer earned gold in the Youth Discus, while Rochelle Coetzee topping the podium in the Youth High Jump and Justine Palframan running to silver in the Junior 400 m. The bronzes can from Bonginkosi Zwane in the junior 5 000 m, Adrine Mukasa in the youth 800 m and Thabiso Kekane in the under 23 400 m Hurdles.

The very hot condition on Saturday were replaced by a massive storm for much of the Sunday which caused considerable disruption to the programme.

The SA Seniors will be held on Saturday and Sunday at Kings Park Track and this will draw the country’s top athletes including 400 m hurdler LJ van Zyl, javelin Throwers Robert Oosthuizen, Sunette Viljoen, and Justine Robbeson, Khotso Mokoena who will be competing in both the long and triple jumps. There are also questions as to whether Caster Semenya will compete in additional events above her focus on the 800 m;
