Bergville: washaway holds up registration

2011-03-08 00:00

VOTER registration continued in the Bergville area yesterday following its cancellation on Saturday after a bridge serving the area was washed away by heavy rains on Friday evening.

KwaZulu-Natal Independent Electoral (IEC) Electoral operations manager Ntombifuthi Masinga confirmed that yesterday the Senzokuhle voting station was opened from 8am till 5pm yesterday to make up for the lost day.

Masinga said the bridge was washed away by overnight rain on Friday and IEC staff and police could not access the voting station.

“We are in liaison with the SANDF [South African National Defence Force] and the Department of Transport towards the construction of a temporary bridge in time for the election in May,” Masinga said. — Witness Reporter.
