Bernard Smith: Chairman of Gongolo Wildlife Reserve (GWR)

“We can only sense the agony and frustration felt by Dorothy [Greene’s wife] and their family and friends. Yesterday was a sad day for us all … David was a shareholder and director of the company.

“The great merit of the GWR proposal was the fact that it would provide for a sustainable use of what is otherwise in the main marginal extensive grazing areas, suitable at best for subsistence agriculture.

“The regional land claims commissioner in February 2002 gazetted two restitution claims over the GWR area totalling 18 000 ha. The GWR was prepared to overlook its doubts about the authenticity of the claims and to sell and lease back the area claimed, in the belief that the development of the project was in the best interests of all the communities in the area.”

Mtholephi Mthimkhulu: KZN MEC for Agriculture

“I would like to strongly condemn this dastardly criminal deed and I am quite certain that our police will be meticulous in their investigation so that the perpetrators of this heinous crime — against one of the key stakeholders in the farming community and agricultural fraternity — are brought to book.

“The safety of our rural communities including the farming fraternity remains one of our key concerns. I am certain that a breakthrough in the investigation into this murder will be made soon.”

Mthimkhulu cautioned those who are peddling what he termed “irresponsible speculation” that the murder of Greene could be linked to the pending expropriation of his farm in the Gongolo area.
