Best coastal drives: Garden Route comes up roses

LONDON — South Africa’s Garden Route has been voted the world’s sixth best coastal drive, in a poll conducted by travel website VirtualTourist.

Voters rated the scenic route, on the N2 between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, for its abundance of wild flowers, secluded bays and quaint villages.

VirtualTourist members also rated Chapman’s Peak drive — with its 114 curves and spectacular cliffside views — for fun motoring.

America’s many Internet users voted the 730 km Pacific Coast Highway between Los Angeles and San Francisco as the top coastal route.

Australia’s 290 km Great Ocean Road. built by soldiers during WW2, pipped the Garden Route in No. 5.
