Bester wins PSL award for best goal

MARITZBURG United midfielder Rudolf Bester, whose excellent strike from range sunk Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at Orlando Stadium in September last year, won Goal of the Season at the Premier Soccer League awards in Pretoria on Sunday night.

The Player of the Year was SuperSport United central defender Morgan Gould, while Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mphela won not just the top scorer’s award, but also the prestigious Player’s Player of the Season, voted for by PSL players.

Bester’s goal, cutting inside Chiefs right-back Jimmy Tau and unleashing a ripper past goalkeeper Arthur Bartman, highlights what an exciting player the Namibian has been in his first season in the PSL.

“Definitely the goal Bester scored against Chiefs was exceptional, like very few that were scored this season,” United chairperson Farouk Kadodia said yesterday. “Bester showed his worth in his first PSL season, and [I] think, with the coach [Ernst Middendorp] having a full pre-season to prepare the team, will be an even better player next season.”

In a good season for Bester, the Namibian also scored the goal that earned Namibia a 1-1 draw against Bafana Bafana in a friendly in Durban in January this year.

“The consistent results didn’t go our way this season, but I think from players like Bester, Chilis Madondo, Felix Obada and Musa Nyatama, next season we will see a more consistent performance from the glimpses we saw this season,” Kadodia said.
